NATURAL POSTURE TECHNOLOGY – Ergonomic Design Concept

The near viewing zone in Shamir Spectrum+ is dynamically located within the lens corridor, taking into account the plus or minus power of the prescription. This reduces the need to tilt the head forwards or backwards or alternatively to lower or raise a book when reading to find the right viewing distance and angle. Any discomfort within their posture is thereby minimized and patients are ensured a comfortably natural posture during near viewing.

Understanding the need for Natural Posture

Natural Posture™  will help patients by minimizing neck and shoulder discomfort and allowing for a natural posture while reading. The natural position of holding reading material is at a distance of 16 inches (40cm), with a viewing angle of about 30º. With the introduction of prescription lenses, the near viewing zone does not correspond to this angle; therefore the patient compensates by tilting their head forward or backward, or by raising or lowering their reading material. This ultimately leads to an uncomfortable and unnatural posture.

With their visible dividing line, flat-top bifocals give the wearer a look that is generally associated with old age and furthermore, flat-top bifocals introduce a vertical surface discontinuity resulting in a disturbing image jump with loss of image as the eye moves from one visual zone to the other.

Sunlight is all around us. It is essential to life. But as we know, not all of the sun’s rays are beneficial.
There are light rays that are invisible to the human eye, and can be damaging.
The sun’s infra-red light is one of them, and our eyes need protection.

Why should we be concerned about infra-red light?

Sunlight is made up of a spectrum of light of varied wavelengths.
Infra-red sunlight accounts for a large part of that spectrum,
and it can be harmful.

 

The spectrum of light can be divided into three major groups:

That means our glasses, which block UV sunlight, only protect us from 3%-5%
of the sunlight’s harmful spectrum, while we remain unprotected from more
than half the sun’s damaging spectrum of light!

 

Infra-red light can be harmful

Infra-red light is energy that produces heat. It is used in the food industry’s ovens to heat our food. When it arrives from the sun, it heats our eyes. The body has a natural defense mechanism against overheating. However, when the eyes are bathed in strong sunlight, the natural mechanism cannot cope and the eyes are in danger of damage. Such damage can be caused by high levels of infrared exposure over a short period of time, or by low levels of infrared over a longer period. What’s more, infra-red sunlight becomes even stronger when reflected off surfaces such as water, snow,
sand or pavement.

 

The effect of IR light on the human eye:

The cornea and the watery humor are the eye tissues most vulnerable to infra-red radiation. However, the greatest concern is with the effect of heating on the lens and retina, the two most visually sensitive components of the eye. Typically, damage caused by the long wavelengths of infra-red radiation is photothermal, because when tissue absorbs infra-red radiation, it becomes heat.

Research has demonstrated a synergy between thermal and photochemical effects.

That means, not only can infra-red radiation cause thermal damage to the eye,

but it also enhances the known damaging effects of UV rays.

IR radiation’s damaging effects on the eyes

 

Retina

Photothermal damage occurs on a cellular and molecular level when the radiant energy of light reaches the retinal tissue. The patient experience includes visual aberrations such as decreased or foggy vision, central scotoma, metamorphopsia, chromatopsia and headache.

Lens

Research indicates that exposure to sunlight’s infra-red radiation facilitates development of cataract, while near-infra-red rays can cause thermal damage to the crystalline lens.

Cornea

Corneal thermal damage from exposure to infra-red sunlight may include opacifications, ulcers, debris, epithelial and stromal haze, thickening, or epithelial erosion, while damaging high doses of infra-red produce immediate pain and vascularization. Eventually, loss of transparency and opacification occur, with the appearance of corneal burns like those appearing on skin exposed to infra-red.

Eyelids

It was previously thought that only ultra-violet light damages the skin. However it is now known that the longer wavelengths of near-infra-red radiation also damage the skin, and affect the delicate skin of the eyelids, causing a range of reactions from mild reddening to eventual cell-death of the skin.

Hard Coatings

Hard coatings are today a standard within an antireflection coating. Therefore lacquers are used which form an almost ideal buffer between the lens surface and the more brittle AR coating.

1. Benefits

Always recommended, sometimes a must

Due to their low density,  are extremely light and hence very comfortable to wear. They do have one disadvantage, however: their relatively soft surface makes them prone to scratches. To remedy this drawback, plastic lenses can be sealed with a hard protective coating.

Scratches on the lens not only lead to diffuse scatter resulting in blurred, “milky” vision, but are also a cosmetic drawback. The approx. 2 µm-thick hard coating makes the surface more resistant to scratches and therefore increases the durability of the lens.

2. How It Is Produced?

The hard coating of plastic lenses using a dip lacquer is a very young technology compared with the AR coating technique introduced in the field of ophthalmic lenses for the first time in 1959. Although the plastic lens Clarlet was launched on the market as long ago as 1963, the first hard dip coating was not introduced until two decades later. Shamir offered the first Clarlet lenses with a hard dip coating in 1986. Ten years later, the hard coating had already become an indispensable standard coating for plastic lenses.

Today, up to 9000 plastic lenses are provided with a hard lacquer coating in the central production facility of Shamir in Aalen, Germany every day.

3. Dipping & Vacuum Deposition

A Comparision

Apart from so-called “wet-chemical” techniques, vacuum deposition processes can also be used to seal lenses with a hard coating. However, the deposited material – quartz (SiO2 ) – is very brittle. Scratches often break open the lens coatings completely to form numerous hairline cracks over the lens surface. The lens soon assumes a “milky” appearance which impairs its imaging properties.
Scratches on a hard lacquer coating, on the other hand, cause much less damage to the surface of the sealed lens. Both the optical quality and the cosmetic appearance of the lens remain intact for a longer time. This is why only the “wet-chemical” technique is used at ZEISS to produce hard lacquer coatings.

Super-high Index for Lens and Hard Coating

After Carl Zeiss was Europe’s first manufacturer to succeed in polymerising a plastic lens with the super-high index 1.665 for batch production, the company focused its attention on enhancing the coating structures used for this material.

The result: a high index hard coating is also used for the high index lenses ZEISS Single Vision AS 1.67 and ZEISS Single Vision Sph 1.6. One of the benefits of this specially matched coating is its high adhesive strength and hence its outstanding durability.
