The Classical Bifocal Product for Presbyopes

The introduction of the first bifocal lenses by ZEISS as long ago as 1952 represented a real revolution at the time. In the recent years, however, the popularity of bifocals has considerably decreased due to the constant improvement in the quality of progressive lenses.

While a large number of segment shapes existed in the past, the type with a curved top is now the most common in most countries and is indicated in the product name by a “C” (curved). Fewer reflections result on the curved surface than on the straight edge of an S segment (S = straight). Today’s bifocal lenses from ZEISS therefore provide wearers with improved cosmetic benefits and enhanced functionality.

 

Segment Widths

Bifocal lenses are available with two different segment widths: 25 mm and 28 mm. The number after the “CT” in the product name indicates the segment width in millimetres. The segment width of 25 mm is adapted to standard conditions of use, providing a sufficiently large visual field for reading purposes. The diameter 28 mm provides correspondingly wider fields of view.

For the segments of glass bifocals from ZEISS, materials with different refractive indices are selected deoending on the addition in order to ensure that, even with higher additions, all bifocal lenses are as thin and flat as possible.

Hardness tests: using DIN ISO 14577

Following the measurement setup as described in DIN ISO 14577 we used an indentation instrument to determine two critical properties of DuraVision® Platinum:

We measured the hardness in a depth range of around 200 nanometers, the most critical range for visible scratches:

To create scratches that extend to more than the critical 200 nm below the coating surface, much higher forces need to be applied for DuraVision Platinum than for conventional greenish ZEISS AR coatings.

At the same time, we also measured the force needed to completely break the coating:

The force needed to generate coating breakage is increased from 211 µN (conventional ZEISS coatings) to 316 µN.

    What’s new:
    Similar technology has been used internationally in many different industries in which the hardness of material surfaces plays an important role, e.g. in the development and production of modern precision tools. But so far, it has not been applicable to lenses.

    At the forefront of research:
    Indentation equipment precise enough for the extremely thin coating layers on spectacle lenses has just recently been developed and was immediately integrated into the ZEISS research lab to help create the hardest ever ZEISS AR coating – DuraVision® Platinum.

    In daily life, most scratches occur when lenses are cleaned with a cloth that has dirt on it, either from abrasive dirt particles that are on the lens when the wiping starts or from dirt particles that are already in the cloth. In the SDWT we use an artificially soiled cloth to simulate damage caused by lens cleaning:

    • Cleaning procedure using standardized dust to soil cleaning cloth
    • Improvement in scratch resistance from previous generations of ZEISS AR coating to DuraVision® Platinum after 600 wipes with 4 kg pressure.

    Bayer ratio (COLTS procedure)

    • The Bayer ratio is a measure of the abrasion resistance of a (coated) surface to an oscillating abrasive medium (defined sand or similar).
    • The surface damage is assessed via the increase in scattered light resulting from the surface damage.
    • Different procedures for such a test are in place.
    • We follow the procedure set forth by the COLTS laboratory in the U.S.
    • (COLTS is the supplier-independent ophthalmic lens testing facility in the U.S.).

    The use of an electron microscope with 3000x magnification makes the advantages of DuraVision® Platinum clearly visible. While the previous generation of ZEISS coatings tears and peels, DuraVision® Platinum only shows fine lines. Less scattered light is generated and a higher Bayer ratio is achieved.
